A ‘Super’ Tuscan

Guidolberto Toscana- 2016

Tuscany, Italy

Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Blend

Tuscany is an important region in central Italy.  It is known as Toscana and topographically consist of hills and valleys with cypress and umbrella pines, olive groves and vineyards. Bolgheri is a town along the Tuscan Coastline made famous by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rochetta who planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines at a time in which Sangiovese was the most revered by the people and DOC laws. Nonetheless, Sassicaia was born. The use of these non-traditional and non-italian wine varieties was an attempt to create wines with more body, intensity and longevity than the typical Tuscan red wine. Although these wines were wildly successful they were only allowed to be labeled as vini da tavola (table wine). Production of these table wines were a way for ambitious producers to make fine wine outside of local wine law restrictions. In 1992, the Italian government folded under the pressure of the EU to elevate these wines to a more suitable designation than that of mere table wine and in 1994 IGT(wine with protected geographical location) wine was born to give acclaim to these zones. These ambitious and high priced wines became known as Supertuscans.

Guidolberto Toscana 2016 is from the Tenuto San Guido Estate and is the second label of the great Sassicaia. It has a nice medium ruby color with a nose of dried red flowers, vanilla, cocoa and dust followed by blackberry and plum. The mouthfeel is full and structured with ripe fruit and a sweet spice and vanilla finish.

I highly recommend this offering from such a renowned producer at a fantastic price compared to the likes of its big brother, Sassicaia
